Therapeutic Approaches
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) involves understanding the interaction between core beliefs, behaviour, and emotions. CBT involves challenging our thought processes and restructuring firmly held beliefs. Through this, we develop the capacity to put various coping strategies in place with the aim of managing distress and sustaining behaviour change.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) employs the belief that that clients are doing the best they can. It assists clients in accepting themselves and past unhelpful behaviour, while at the same time focusing on growth and development. DBT has roots in CBT and involves teaching the client skills like mindfulness, interpersonal communication skills, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. The aim of these skills are to improve overall functioning and engagement with the outside world.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) focuses on helping clients process trauma and associated physiological and emotional experiences through bilateral (left-right) stimulation. EMDR helps change how traumatic experiences are stored in the brain, with the aim of reducing the intensity of distress and associated responses.
